About Love, Chocolate and Beer

by Violet Duke:

pLove, Chocolate and Beer

"A new must-read series from Violet Duke." --NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author Kathleen Brooks

Romance has met its most unlikely match-up...

Luke Bradford is a chocolatier on a mission. After moving his chocolate shop, and newly single life, to the quirky town of Cactus Creek, Luke wants nothing more than to devote all his energy into making his business a success--by taking the romance market by storm. But his grand plans get thrown for a loop when he locks horns with the feisty beer-brewing beauty next door who calls his 'romantic idealism' a load of fairytale bull. Soon, driving the woman sparking nuts becomes another wickedly fun priority he simply can't get enough of.

In his defense, she's addictively easy to incite...and plain impossible to resist.

Beloved local brewmaster Dani Dobson is beyond riled up. It's bad enough the new shop owner in town comes locked and loaded with both a distractingly rugged charm and sexy flashing dimples, but the whole only-in-the-movies variety of romance he's selling--the kind her world has been crushed by before--is really doing a number on her allergy to unrealistic clichés. What's worse, he's created an annoyingly clever ad campaign that dubs 'beer joints' like hers as the "cave where romance goes to hibernate." The nerve of that man.

Combustible chemistry or not, damn it, this means war. The stakes...very likely, her heart.

He's a better fighter

A fighter to the core, Hudson Reyes has collected enough battle scars now to last several lifetimes. But after his combat injuries retire him from the life he wasn't ready to give up, Hudson finds himself spending the carbon copy days of his new career as a Hollywood fight scene and weapons specialist just doing what he knows best: surviving. Until he meets her. The one woman who makes him want to live again. With wounds as deep as his own, she's a scrappy little thing--an angel-faced paradox that comes as a package deal with an offbeat town of admirably protective, but downright nosy folks.

And a wicked roundhouse kick that's become intimately familiar with his head. ...

but she has all the weapons.

An antique arms authenticator by day and a self-defense instructor by night, Liana Lin has made a living turning the unthinkable demons of her past into the passions that fuel, and fill, her life. So when the unjustly handsome man she's been unable to stop thinking about literally takes her to the mat with martial arts styles unlike anything she's ever seen--pinning her with a molten hot stare that melts her like a marshmallow trapped between a graham cracker and a chocolate square--Lia flips into no-holds-barred fight mode. Because if one man could find a way to disarm her carefully-built defenses, it'd be him.

Now if only they could stop sparring long enough to find out...

Book Review - Imperfectly Bad by A.E. Woodward

I’m Rob Ziviani. Oh, you’ve heard of me? Wait, did we? Oh yeah, I remember.

No, that’s a lie, I don’t remember. I’ve had most of New York City and I don’t really remember any of them. There’s only ever been one. . .

This is my story. Read it, don’t read it. I really don’t give a damn. It’s not going to change my life, so why the hell should I care?

Because I don’t care about anything.

Not since her.

Three days, that was my average. Three days before my skin started crawling and I needed another hit. By hit I mean another girl. Girls were my drugs. They had been for a while now. At least they were safe, well, as long as I made sure to wrap it.

The fact of the matter was that I had slept with a lot of girls. It wasn’t something I was particularly proud of, but there were worse things to be addicted to.

Tonight I’d chosen the grocery store as my hunting ground. The raven-haired firecracker from the other night had left me feeling dirty, so I was in the mood for something sweet. It was just a guess, but I figured women who spent their Friday evening grocery shopping were probably more innocent.

And I was totally in the mood for innocence.

Wandering the aisles I did some of my normal shopping, placing a few things I needed in one of those hand basket things then I took my spot by the cereals. Yes, the cereal aisle. You want to talk about innocence—it doesn’t get any more wholesome than cereal.

I picked up my box of Fruity Pebbles and stood there, pretending to study the nutritional information. Luckily I didn’t have to wait long before someone joined me. Someone up there must have been smiling down on me because the first girl to walk down the aisle was a solid “eight.”
With auburn hair and her nose and cheeks covered in freckles, she was definitely what I would call “cute.” The clothes she wore put her at college-aged, or certainly fresh out, and her hand basket was empty. She was definitely here to pick up her dinner.

And the best student dinner?

Cereal.

Told you—I was a genius.

She was likely homesick too. Missing out on a good home-cooked meal. Poor thing. But never mind, her night was about to get a whole lot better.

She stopped next to me and grabbed some healthy bullshit. Out of the corner of my eye I looked at her and my lips tipped upward in a smile. When I spoke, I kept my eyes fixed on the shelves, but I knew she’d know I was talking to her. They always did.

“I’m trying to convince myself that Fruity Pebbles are healthy.”

She giggled. “Yeah, sorry to inform you but they’re not.”

She blushed, her face a shade comparable to her hair.

“Dinner?” I asked, turning to face her and gesturing to the lack of food in her basket.

“Am I that transparent?”

“No, I’m just a good guesser.” I stuck my hand out for her. “Rob,” I said as we shook hands.

“And just in case you were wondering, I’m a fabulous cook.”

Rob is damaged, wounded, and self medicating with alcohol and sex. He hides it all behind an attitude that he really doesn't care about anything, but the truth is that his heart was broken 12 years ago by the love of his life (who also brought a whole lot of crazy into his life) who left without a goodbye. When she reappears in his life, Jenny makes him face things he was avoiding. But it is actually Layla who he meets at this same time that helps him begin to heal and believe in possibilities again.

I have to admit that I had a very hard time liking Rob at first. He was just flat out abrasive for most of the beginning of his story. I kept thinking that there has to be something good about him if his friends stick around and I really like them. And truth be told I couldn't for the life of me understand the draw he felt towards Jenny. Most of the flashbacks he shared weren't very pretty at all. She seemed like the crazy you run from and not debate on signing up for again. But then Layla happened and he began to grow on me.

I give Imperfectly Bad 3 hearts!

Book Review - The Queen's Wings by Jamie Schmidt

My Thoughts

Carolyn knows that she is a dragon and she is just waiting until she makes the change. Some of those changes are already happening. (The whole puking thing...um...ewww!) She has been telling everyone, but so far no one is listening to her theory that she is just a late bloomer. If she is a dragon, that would make her a queen which comes with a whole new sets of luggage. Ryan is the FBI guy who vows to protect her...well, except from his mother and from her making babies with any of the other dragons.

I had a hard time with Ryan as I kept wondering where his loyalies lie. Over and over he kept saying that he would do as he was asked. I didn't like what happened to Carolyn's best friend. She was really the only one that Carolyn knew for sure that she could trust completely. I loved Carolyn. Especially since her hoard was books.

I give The Queen's Wings 4 hearts!

Book Review - Honor Reclaimed by Tonya Burrows

My Thoughts

Phoebe is in Afghanistan doing a story on child brides when she runs into Seth, the man whose life she ruined years before with a story she wrote about a mission where he lost his team and he became a prisoner. He is now part of a search and rescue team sent in to rescue a soldier that Phoebe has connections to help. He has no idea who she is as they become close as they work together not only to save this soldier but each other as well.

I just loved Seth. Something about him just tugged my heart. Those moments when he so wanted to reach out to Phoebe and couldn't. The moment when he realized the hoodie was his security blanket. His frantic search in the village and the relief filled laughter. The realization he has as he gazes at the black and white photos Phoebe took of him. I loved Phoebe strength and tenacity. She didn't run away from this complicated man. She loved on him. I want to read more about them.

I loved the whole HORNET team and I really look forward to reading more of their stories - especially Ian's story. There's definitely something about Ian.

I loved Honor Reclaimed and give it 5 hearts!

About the Book

Former Marine scout sniper Seth Harlan is new to HORNET and anxious to prove he can still do his job despite an ongoing battle with PTSD. He remembers all too well what it's like to sit inside an enemy camp, praying for rescue and waiting for death. So when a black ops soldier contacts HORNET to rescue a buddy who was left behind, all sorts of nasty memories strain his newfound stability.

When an interview with a runaway Afghan child bride leads photojournalist Phoebe Leighton to an arms deal involving a suitcase bomb powerful enough to wipe out a mid-sized town, she realizes this is one battle she can't win on her own. Forming an unlikely alliance with a ragtag team of military and government delinquents, she meets Seth, a sniper carrying as many emotional scars as physical, who impresses her with his steely will and ignites passions within her she thought long dead.

Suddenly this mission is about a lot more than an abandoned soldier. Racing against the clock, Seth, Phoebe, and the rest of HORNET struggle to stop that bomb before it reaches it's final destination: The United States.

About the Author

Writing has always been my one true love. I wrote my first novel-length story in 8th grade and haven't put down my pen since. I received a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego and I'm now working on a MFA in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.

When I'm not writing, I spend my time reading, painting (badly), exploring new places, and enjoying time with my family. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let's be honest, I'll take a bad horror movie too!) I'm a geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I'm also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

I share my life with two dogs and a ginormous cat. I'm from a small town in Western New York, but I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust and usually end up moving someplace new every few years. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.

Book Review - Queen of Swords by Katee Robert

My Thoughts

Ophelia thinks that she's on her way to be married off to the prince when she's actually been kidnapped by his half brother, Boone who just happens to be the guy she just had a steamy overnighter with. Boone has kidnapped her in order to stop the wedding so that he can try to overthrow his brother for the throne once their father passes. Ophelia has walked into this blindly. Well almost blindly as her cards have hinted that she may find her happily ever after once all is said and done. She ends up joining Boone in the fight against his brother and in the process they stop fighting their feelings for each other.

I loved Boone and Ophelia together. Even with all the resistance to their feelings, their chemistry was undeniable. Katee Robert sure can write some steamy scenes. I just love her. I did want to know more about what happened to Ophelia's crew and what caused her family to go into hiding. I would love to read the story of how her mom and dad got together.

I give Queen of Swords 4 hearts!

About the Book

When the cards tell Ophelia Leoni she's supposed to marry the Prince of Hansarda, the gunrunner grits her teeth and boards the starship that comes for her. It doesn't matter if the ship's commander is the gorgeous stranger she just spent a wild, drunken night with. As a Diviner, she’s painfully aware the cards don't lie. Ever.

Boone O’Keirna knows Ophelia is trouble the second he sees the way she moves. Not about to let the little hellcat marry his sadistic half-brother, Boone pretends to be the Prince’s emissary and kidnaps Ophelia. Too bad they can’t be in the same room without him wanting to throw her out an airlock–or into bed.

Even as they fight each other–and their explosive attraction–Ophelia and Boone sense something is wrong. Too much is going their way. Soon, they realize while the cards may never lie, the truth is sometimes hidden between them...and the future king of Hansarda is not one to take defeat lying down.

About the Author

Katee Robert learned to tell stories at her grandpa's knee. Her favorites then were the rather epic adventures of The Three Bears, but at age twelve she discovered romance novels and never looked back.

Though she dabbled in writing, life got in the way--as it often does--and she spent a few years traveling, living in both Philadelphia and Germany. In between traveling and raising her two wee ones, she had the crazy idea that she'd like to write a book and try to get published.

Her first novel was an epic fantasy that, God willing, will never see the light of day. From there, she dabbled in YA and horror, before finally finding speculative romance. Because, really, who wouldn't want to write entire books about the smoking-hot relationships between two people?

She now spends her time--when not lost in Far Reach worlds--playing imaginary games with her wee ones, writing, ogling men, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Book Review - Her Royal Protector by Alexandra Sellers

My Thoughts

Aly is researching turtles in Arif's country and someone is sabotaging her research. Both are distrustful of each other due to what others have told them and are fighting not only their attraction for each other but also those that want to stop Aly from doing her work.

Poor Aly is such a mess with how her father filled her head with such lies. I know that Arif began his mission to combat those lies with his heart not in the right place, but once he fell for her he had such a way with words. Oh and he was pretty good with the sexy talk too. I would love to read more about what their wedding and more of their future would be like.

I give Her Royal Protector 4 hearts!

About the Book

Aly Percy is her family's ugly duckling, and she's never been allowed to forget it. So she knows better than to imagine that Cup Companion Arif al Najimi's blue gaze holds anything but contempt for her as a woman, or ever will. But if he's offering to show her just how wild one night with him can be, wouldn't she be a fool to turn down his charity? She may never get another offer like this one.

Arif al Najimi isn't sure why he's dreaming about the little scientist who's so determined to take crazy risks for the sake of her research into the endangered turtles of his country. But as luck would have it, he's going to get the chance to do a little research of his own…into the question of why Aly believes her own negative publicity about how desirable she is—and how hard it will be to convince her of the truth.

Book Review - Overwhelmed by You by Nashoda Rose

My Thoughts

I have to admit that I was mad at Ream at the end of Torn from You when he brought the chick to the party. I really didn't know what to expect from him in this book. I was totally #teamKat all the way going in. Then Ream goes and says something like this...

"Second chances are for when you're done with the first.
I wasn't done. I'll never be done.
I don't need second chances, beautiful.
Not with you. You're my first chance.”

And then I am all about #teamReamandKat and wanting this broken couple to kiss (and oh boy can they steam up more than just a kiss) and make up. Don't get me wrong they have some serious baggage to unpack. We're talking several sets of super sized luggage, but together they make sense.
Ream said it best...

“You make everything ugly inside me beautiful, Kat.”

I am so not going to give any of the good stuff away, but will say that both Ream and Kat are holding back secrets.
I just wanted to shake the stupid out of Kat for keeping hers.
Ream's on the other hand...made me feel sad for him and sick to my stomach for him and mad at the people who should've protected him and about bazillion other emotions.
About as many as I felt about him throughout the book. There is a moment (you will know which one I am talking when you read it) when Ream is completely devoid of emotion and it literally made me cry for him thinking that it had finally shattered him.

I love reading Nashoda's books for so many reasons. First off she can tell one hell of a story. I am guaranteed to be thinking about her books long after I have finished reading the last page and can have conversation after conversation about them with others who have read them. Secondly I am sure to run the spectrum of emotions from the first to the last page. From lust to laughter and everything in between, Nashoda makes me feel with her words. That's a damn fine gift.

I give Overwhelmed by You 5 hearts!

About the Book

Love is ugly and secrets will destroy you.

KAT

I don’t beg.

I don’t cry.

And I don’t give second chances.

Ream, the lead guitarist of the rock band Tear Asunder, deserves a gold medal for best dick move ever when he ran the moment he discovered my secret after two days of hot sex. Then he brings some chick to my coming home party from the hospital—after being shot.
I hate him.

Until …

Ream’s six foot two frame unfolds out of the car after being gone on tour for eight months. I stared. And in my defense, any girl would stare. It would almost be rude not to because Ream was the type of guy who stood out. Not because he was loud and obnoxious. No, it was because he was the complete opposite. Subtle and dangerously quiet. If he spoke, you’d better hope he liked you because otherwise you’d be falling at his feet begging for mercy. Except me … I don’t beg—ever.

But when our eyes locked, it was Ream’s steady confidence that had my nerves shooting off like jet sprinklers.

Then…

Ream told me he didn't need a second chance because he was still working on his first.

REAM

Sex is ugly. It’s using someone for your own narcissistic pleasure. I did it, but hated it—until her. She was unexpected. Then I had to wreck our beginning with my screwed up past. I don’t deserve her, but I’m selfish and I’m taking her anyway. This is who I am and it’s too late to change me.
