Book Review - Night Child by Lisa Kessler

My Thoughts

Muriah owns a bookstore and was hired to find an ancient codex for a customer who ends up murdered. She is then attacked soon afterwards. Her guardian/protector then requests the help of Issa, a Night Walker, as she is in danger now. Muriah and Issa must work together to save the life of an unborn child who will in turn save the world. In order to do that Muriah must use her powers to locate the items to trap their enemy, Apep, and Issa must protect her since using her powers weakens her. They aren't just battling Apep though. They are fighting their feelings for each other as well. Issa lost someone he cared about and doesn't want to get hurt again. Muriah can't imagine giving up her life to be a Night Walker and give up her dream of having children one day. As they find a way to defeat evil, they find a way to break down the barriers that are keeping them apart.

I really loved their time together in Issa's tomb. I know that sounds super creepy, but I assure you it was super steamy. My heart broke when Issa tells Muriah that no one has ever cared for him and she tells him that he deserves to be cared for. I wanted to shake her for using her powers while he was sleeping and couldn't watch out for her though. I loved the adventure they had taking them all over from New York to Cairo as they fell in love.

I give Night Child 4 hearts!

Book Review - Betting the Billionaire by Avery Flynn

My Thoughts

Gabe has been calling Keisha trying to talk her into selling her family furniture business to no avail. Not only does she resist selling, but she resents him for thinking that he can buy anything he wants. He is intrigued enough to make the drive to attempt to convince her face to face when his car breaks down and he ends up stranded with her. Not knowing at first who he is, Keisha is attracted to him and they spend time together. But that all comes to an end once it is revealed who he is and his true reason for wanting to buy her family business. They both agree to a bet to each make a piece of furniture and whoever makes the one that is best liked wins.

I have to admit that I found it a bit hard to like Gabe at first. Once he revealed his heartache over his father I warmed up to him more. I loved the conversation Keisha had with her father when he told her that her being happy was most important to him and he encouraged her to follow her dreams.

I give Betting the Billionaire 4 hearts!

About the Book

If that man calls her one more time... So what if Gabe Campos is a model-dating billionaire who gets Keisha Jacobs hotter than a Ferrari's engine on the straightaway? He keeps pushing her to sell her family's furniture business, but she'll never give in--not unless she wants to give her father a second heart attack.

All Gabe should be thinking about is how he'll finally get revenge on the man who killed his father. But when he meets the man's daughter, Keisha, instead of focusing on destroying Jacobs Fine Furnishings, he can't get her warm-whisky voice out of his mind.

Forced by a snow storm to spend the night together, their passion ignites. The next day, however, it's back to business. The only way Keisha can save her family is to win a bet with the billionaire. But neither realized their hearts are part of the bargain...

Book Review - An Unsuitable Husband by Ros Clarke

My Thoughts

Theresa and Emile meet at a club spending the night dancing and in bed together. The next morning after Emile shares that his ex-girlfriend is stalking him, Theresa jokes that getting married would solve both their problems as her mother keeps trying to play matchmaker for her. Emile is exactly the opposite of who her mother would want her to marry and it would make her crazy. While they have enjoyed their time together, they go their separate ways.

Emile finds himself in a bind after a fight with one of his teammates. His teammate's girlfriend has made up a story that they have had an affair and gone to the tabloids with it. This on top of other bad publicity puts him in the position of needing to fix this situation and thinks of Theresa's proposition. He approaches her and she agrees to get married.

What I really loved about Theresa and Emile together is that Emile challenged her to not be so serious and lighten up a bit. The first dinner with her parents when he just speaks his mind made me laugh out loud. I love that he wouldn't let her go. He fought for her.

I give An Unsuitable Husband 4 hearts!

You can purchase the book here:

About the Book

Theresa Chartley has no time for marriage, and no room for disappointment--especially with French soccer player Emile Renaud. Sure, he’s gorgeous, but he’s wrong for a career woman like Theresa. If only her mother would stop pressuring her to get married and let her live her own life. Finding a very unsuitable husband to shock her parents into silence and put an end to the marriage campaign is the only answer. Emile will do just fine.

Theresa’s outrageous proposal is the answer to Emile’s problem. They’re complete opposites living in different worlds, but a fake marriage will let him ditch his clingy ex once and for all. Then he’ll be free of commitment and free to live his life the way he wants to.

A contract. Twelve months. And they walk away scot-free.  But a year of marriage tests them both in unimaginable ways. Maybe Emile isn’t unsuitable after all, but how can Theresa let herself love him when she signed a contract to let him go?

Book Review - The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller by L.B. Simmons

My Thoughts

Aubrey hides herself behind Raven who is a goth girl with piercings and colored contacts keeping everyone at a distance for many years. This all changes when she goes away to college and meets Quinn and Kaeleb who will not only become her best friends, but remind her who she is and what it means to really live life again.

Aubrey will break your heart over and over again. This broken little girl who so desperately needs to love and be loved. I so adored Quinn in her life. She forces her pinkness all over her and hugs herself into Bree's world. At the same time Quinn also has her own twist to deal with at the same time. Then there is Kaeleb. Oh Kaeleb. Ever pushing his way back (Yes I said back and no I won't explain here. You have to read why.) into her heart. I was rooting for him all along. He has his own baggage too, but deals with it. They all do in their own way. Together. And the end...well...yeah...that.

I loved this book. Loved. Period.
I give The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller 5 hearts!

About the Book

Death.

For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.

For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.

As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.

Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…

But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.

Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?

Will they be enough to finally bring about…

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller?

Synopsis

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Mateo suddenly grabbed my hand. He took me to the side of the road and lifted up the top wire of a fence, about to lead me through it. I stepped under, careful not to trip, and we walked, hand in hand, across a golden field of tall grass and brilliant wildflowers. In the distance was a picturesque oak tree, its shimmering green canopy leaning over the tawny ground. We went over to the tree, the grass tickling my bare legs as I held up my skirt and stood at the edge of the shade, looking at the field, at Mateo. The grass and the flowers practically swallowed the trunk of the tree, and there wasn’t really a clear area to even sit. “Not really the best tree to have a nap under,” I said. He shrugged, the sunlight dappled on him through the leaves above. “It looked better from far away.” He was still holding my hand. As if we both noticed this at the same time, he went and grabbed my other hand and squeezed both. He dipped his chin and gazed intently at me. Whatever polite façade we were demonstrating a few moments ago was quickly disappearing. I could feel the change between us, the tension growing thicker, calling attention to it, to us. To what we were and what was unresolved. It called attention to everything. And each moment that Mateo held onto me with his strong hands, every second that his deep eyes bore into mine, seeking and searching, the tension intensified. “Vera.” He said my name like silk and I knew I would never grow tired of hearing it. I looked down, unable to bear the impassioned look on his face. “I never got a chance last night to tell you how I feel.” The cicadas chirped, matching the rhythm of my skipping heart. A light breeze blew past, tousling his hair. “I know.” I swallowed thickly. I took in a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “And I’m afraid to hear it.” “Why?” he asked. “Because you don’t feel the same way?” I looked up to see pain pinched on his brow as his eyes sought mine. “No,” I told him, mustering a scared smile. “Because I do.”

Excerpt

“Thank you so much, Quinn. This day has been…unbelievable. And I owe it all to you. You have no idea.” My voice trembles a bit with the admission, because she really has no idea what she’s done for me today.
I feel normal.
A normal girl, about to have a normal birthday celebration with her friends, in a normal (albeit spectacular) dress, with normal hair and make-up.
The only thing that’s missing is a pair of normal shoes.
“Shoes! I need shoes!” I exclaim.
“No, you don’t.” Quinn giggles and reaches for the knob of my bedroom door.
“What? Why wouldn’t I need shoes?
That makes no sense.
She’s drunker than I thought.
That’s it, I’m officially hiding the champagne.
“You’ll see,” she says just as there’s a knock at the front door.
She winks. “Trust me. Just, stay in here. Don’t come out until someone comes to get you.”
After Quinn quietly shuts the door behind her, I remain seated. As the sounds of Kaeleb’s murmur filters into my room, a nervous excitement flitters through my belly and spreads into my chest. My joy takes flight and I breathe in deeply, contentment pumping enthusiastically with each thrumming heartbeat.
Damn, it feels good to be alive.
I don’t have to wait for long. After a very loud squeal from Quinn in the other room, there’s a knock at my door. My pulse kicks up and I rise from the bed, smoothing out my dress. With a glance in the mirror, I pluck a couple of sections of my new hair with my fingers and set them back into place.  “Come in,” I remark, turning in the direction of the door.
The handle turns and as Kaeleb pokes his head around the corner, his eyes find mine. His eyebrows rise as his mouth falls slightly open, and he breaks my gaze as his focus shifts to take in my hair, my exposed neck and the line of my dress. He holds his stare briefly at the crystalline sash lining my waist, and then slowly drifts down to my smoothly-shaven legs and perfectly painted toenails. The left side of his mouth quirks up as he clears his throat, frozen in place. He tears his scrutiny away from my feet to fully step into the room, then turns away from me to shut the door.
I take advantage of the 1.5 seconds his back is turned, and survey him from head to toe. His light-blue button-up is folded to his elbows, displaying the prominence of the flexed muscles along his forearms. As he places both palms on the door and leans into them, his shirt rides up enough for me to see the designs on the back pockets of his dark jeans. They hug his ass perfectly, and for the first time in my life, I want to slide my hands right into those pockets just to feel the hardness of his toned body.
My fingers itch with the need to touch him, but I maintain control while Kaeleb braces against the door, inhaling and exhaling deeply. He stays planted there for a few more seconds until I suddenly begin to feel self-conscious. I run my hands over my hair and dress to make sure everything is as it should be.
Just as I start to ask him if he’s all right, he whips around with a full smile on his face. A few long strides later, and he’s standing right in front of me. Raising both hands, he traces the tips of his fingers along the sides of my cheeks, leaving a scorching trail as they run down my neck and thread themselves into the hair at my nape. With his thumbs underneath my chin, he tilts my head back and looks me directly in the eyes.
“You look amazing, Sunshine. Truly breathtaking.” His head dips slightly and he runs his lips tentatively along mine, the movement so sensual I can’t keep my hands off of him any longer. Fisting his shirt in my hands, I pull him into me and press my mouth hard against his, the need to taste him overriding my caution. A whimper rises in my throat and escapes into his mouth as his tongue slides in between my lips, slowly and deliberately, taking his time to stroke and caress mine. His hold tightens as his fingers curl deeper into my hair, the tinge of pain sending shockwaves of pleasure coursing through my body until they land right in between my legs, the throbbing sensation growing with each strike.
After another gentle sweep of his tongue, he lessens the kiss and pulls back slightly.  His lips brush against mine before they slide over to the corner of my mouth, up along my cheek, and then rest them against my ear as he breathes, “Happy birthday. The dress is phenomenal.”

Book Review - Make It A Double by Sawyer Bennett

My Thoughts

Brody comes home after five years in prison so different than the man he was when he went in. He has lost so much and has distanced himself from his family and friends. When Alyssa first reaches out to him offering a place to do his community service, he lashes out at her pushing her away as well. He later changes his mind and begins volunteering at her animal shelter. In the midst of this sanctuary for abused animals he not only finds himself in work that helps mends his heart, but also discovers that love and trust are possible.

Brody and Alyssa's story touched my heart in a way that I hadn't expected. This journey that Brody takes is heartbreaking and beautiful and agonizing and magnificent. To witness the progression of his relationship with Alyssa from resentful because of his past experience to complete trust by sharing that past experience was astonishing. Alyssa's acceptance of all he is and how that effected him was lovely. My favorite moment and that one that shattered me into tears was the gathering of all of Brody's family and friends where he bared his heart. I was undone.

I absolutely LOVED this book!
Seriously...in my top 10 this year!

I give Make It A Double 5 hearts!

You can purchase this book here:

About the Book

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.
